The Quesnel Curling Club has the support of City Council to host provincials

Quesnel City Council is giving the local curling club a helping hand when it comes to potentially hosting the 2026 BC Curling Championships,

Council will dip in to Council Initiatives for up to $5,417, which amounts to one third of the ice fee for the West Fraser Centre.

Some, including Councillor Scott Elliott, wanted to make it contingent on the Cariboo Regional District helping out.

“Because if we have to do the whole thing by ourselves then that’s another kettle of fish, not just about the money, but if we’re just picking up the whole tab and the CRD isn’t then that is a challenge as well.”

There was some talk about sending the issue back to the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee.

Councillor Mitch Vik, however, noted that the decision of that body at the last meeting was firm.

“That decision was ratified that that was not going to be handled as a joint rec function because of policy prohibiting the discounting or providing of free facilities, so I think Joint Planning is finished with this decision. This is another sort of angle to achieve the vent which is a sharing of resources from each local government.”

The Curling Club is also asking the CRD for $5,417.

The Lhtako Dene Nation will be co-hosting the event along with the curling club if they are successful in getting it.

The BC Curling Championships would take place from December 26th, 2025 through January 4th, 2026.
