Quesnel Chamber calls for stiffer sentences for theft

The Quesnel and District Chamber of Commerce has reacted to what appears to be a very light sentence for a man who pleaded guilty to charges related to thefts at local businesses.

30-year old James Reid was sentenced to time served, which amounted to three days in custody although he was given credit for 5, and 12 months probation after pleading guilty to three counts of theft under $5,000.

Kathy Somerville, Executive Director with the Chamber, says “with the continued rise in theft and crime in the community, the Chamber supports stronger consequences and accountability for those who commit these crimes.”

She goes on to say that businesses cannot absorb the costs of theft and vandalism.

Somerville says the business community can’t make a living wage when goods continually walk out their doors.
