City of Williams Lake Looking for Community Input on Active Transport Project

The City of Williams Lake is seeking community feedback for a potential project via a survey.

The City is looking to develop a grant-funded Active Transportation Network Plan with Fraser Basin Council and Urban Systems.

Active Transportation is any sort of human-powered transportation methods, such as walking, cycling, skateboarding, e-bikes, and e-scooters.

The City is asking members of the community to participate in the survey and provide a wide range of voices and active transportation methods to provide foundation on how the Active Transportation Network’s development will take place. If the project is approved.

In a press release issued by the City and the Fraser Basin Council, Jane Wellburn, Regional Manager for Cariboo-Chilcotin, says that providing options for active transport plays “an important part” in having a vibrant community.

“The survey will help us better understand how residents currently move around the community for their daily needs, identify current challenges, and explore future opportunities for active transportation.”

An Active Transportation Network was presented to Williams Lake City Council during the Nov. 5 Council Meeting.

Ruth Lloyd and Bert Groenenburg presented information and data gathered at the June BC Active Transportation Summit in New Westminster on other Active Transportation projects across British Columbia. Cities like Nanaimo and Victoria have had calmer traffic flows and pedestrians are feeling safer with added bike lanes. Lloyd and Groenenburg reported that it also allowed the cities to redo roadways that had dangerous blind spots at intersections.

They also reported that the island cities saw a growth in cycling and cycling-based tourism with the amount of trails that were created. They also reported that Hope and Pemberton are starting their own Active Transportation Networks.

The Survey can be found online on the City of Williams Lake’s website, and paper copies can be picked up at City Hall.

The deadline to complete the survey is Monday, December 2.
