North Cariboo politicians asked to help solve bathroom dilemma at Alex Fraser Park in Quesnel

The Quesnel Rodeo Club is asking the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee to chip in for a new bathroom trailer at Alex Fraser Park.

The request, for 54 thousand dollars, was made at this week’s meeting by Rodeo Club President Ray Jasper.

“We’re looking for a washroom-trailer that has come off the pipeline that we can retrofit on an interim basis. Hopefully as these pipelines kind of wind down in some of these big jobs, Site-C and stuff like that, maybe there is an opportunity to pick one up reasonable so that’s what we’re shooting for on the short term.”

Jasper says the club is willing to put in 25 thousand dollars of its own money even though it leases the park and won’t own it.

He says the current trailer can no longer be used.

“It should be condemned, well it basically is, it’s locked and it’s never going to be opened again. We need an upgrade and last night we were there to let the politicians know what we’re up against and to see if we can get a little bit of help to get something done.”

Jasper says it is an embarrassing situation.

“We have a facility that is probably one of the finest in the province, one of the busiest equine facilities in Central BC if not all of BC. I would hate to take someone around on a tour of our beautiful park and believe me we do, and if we showed them that I would be embarrassed. Unfortunately, it really effects the Quesnel Rodeo more than any of the other user groups.”

He says the only other option down by the back pens is too far away…

“If you think about it, you’re in city hall, so if you had to go to Dairy Queen to use the washroom from city hall every day, I bet you they’d put new bathrooms somewhere closer. And that’s about the distance that it would be for people to come out of the grandstand, go back out into the parking lot, and use that washroom.”

Jasper says a new bathroom trailer would be seen as a temporary solution, and he says he was encouraged to hear some of the politicians talk about a permanent bathroom at the park.
