The cost of recreation is going up by 8 percent in the North Cariboo.
The increase, for 2025, still has to be rubber stamped by the Cariboo Regional District but the North Cariboo Joint Advisory Committee approved the hike at last (Tuesday) night’s meeting.
The five year financial plan was also passed which calls for a 40 percent increase over that time period, or 8 percent per year.
Not everyone at the table was on board with such a large increase.
City Councillor Martin Runge was opposed to years two through five without first reviewing the budgets at each recreation facility.
The committee did agree to strategic planning early in 2025 to thoroughly review things.
The main reason for the increase over the five years is to build up capital reserves by 3.2 million dollars, although it is heavily weighted to the final three years and it should be noted that at the same meeting the committee members were kicking around the idea of using some of this year’s contribution on a new temporary washroom at Alex Fraser Park.
$100,000 is slated to go into capital reserves in year one, $400,000 in year two, $800,000 in year three and then $950,000 in each of the final two years.
