Year over year unemployment rate continues to drop in the Cariboo

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo region dropped again last month.

Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says it was 4.9 percent in October of this year, compared to 5.3 in October of 2023.

That is the 8th straight monthly decline year over year in the Cariboo.

Despite the drop last month though, there were actually 900 fewer people working in the region.

“The number of people working, there were 86,900 people working and a year ago there were a bit more, 87,800. The participation rate was 61.9 percent this October. It was 64 percent a year ago.”

Ferrao says there was some movement in the different sectors.

“There were some increases scattered around in a few of the service industries. Healthcare rose the most, healthcare and social assistance I should say, it was the most. There were smaller increases in a few other service industries. And in the good sector, construction is down. And a little bit also in natural resources.”

The national jobless rate was unchanged at 6.5 percent last month.

BC’s unemployment rate was 5.8 percent.

Only Quebec was lower at 5.7.

Here is a breakdown of all the provinces:

Quebec 5.7%
British Columbia 5.8%
Manitoba 5.9%
Saskatchewan 6.0%
Nova Scotia 6.2%
Ontario/New Brunswick 6.8%
Alberta 7.3%
Prince Edward Island 10%
Newfoundland and Labrador 10.1%
