Barkerville Historic Town & Park has announced the return of its beloved Old-Fashioned Christmas event.
Stewart Cawood, the Manager of Public Programming & Media, says it will take place on December 14th and 15th this year.
“We were able to bring it back last year. It was the first time since the pandemic, so it was the first Christmas event in four years, and it was a very busy weekend. I think we had close to two thousand people over the two days so we’re hoping that this year will be busy as well.”
Cawood confirms that this year’s event was made possible thanks to a generous donation from Osisko Mining.
“After the challenges posed by the Antler Creek Wildfire this summer, we were uncertain whether we could host it again this year.”
Cawood says anyone that hasn’t been to Barkerville during the Christmas season is really missing out.
“It is a magical time, it is just blanketed in snow and it is more snow that you could expect to see in most other places in British Columbia. There is also programming, everyone is bundled up, all the fires are going in the stoves, and we’ve got decorations out and when you hear the sleigh go by, the sleigh bells and the horses, there is just a magical feeling that goes with it.”
Cawood says there will also be photos with Father Christmas and caroling on main street.
He says people can do some holiday shopping at McPherson’s Jewellers, Mason & Daly, and C. Strouss, and there will be fresh baking at the Goldfield Bakery and chili at the House Hotel Saloon.
