Northern Health participating in Sexual and Reproductive Health Day

Northern Health is reminding people to “Heart your Parts and your Partners” during Sexual and Reproductive Health Day today (Fri).

Public Health Nurse, Shellie O’Brien says the day is about one thing.

“Basically they want to promote safe sex practices including using a condom, not having sex with more than one partner at a time, getting regular STI tests and to avoid sexual contact if you have any symptoms.”

However O’Brien says getting tested is not the only important step.

“Getting tested is just one part of safe sex, it’s important to know who you are choosing as partner and to communicate with that person.”

Northern Health is also promoting healthy relationships as sexual health and well being includes social, emotional, spiritual and physical aspects of sexuality and relationships.

The best way to avoid contracting a sexual transmitted infection is by wearing a condom during any form of sexual activity.

Using a condom is also considered an effective form of birth control.
