Quesnel School District relying on fewer non-certified teachers this year

There is still a teacher shortage in Quesnel but the District is relying on fewer non-certified teachers this year.

The numbers released at the most recent Board of Education meeting indicated that are 11 this year, down from 15 in 2023-24.

Superintendent Dan Lowndes says non-certified teachers are still qualified.

“That is correct. I guess we still hold staff to the same bar as we have in the past. Our pursuit is always for certified teachers in classrooms yes.”

Lowndes says Quesnel isn’t the only District that is struggling to find certified teachers.

“The teacher shortage in prior years was definitely more prevalent in the north, but we’re seeing more and more districts in the southern parts of the province with the same needs.”

In addition to full-time staff, there are 29 certified teachers and 31 non-certified teachers that are on-call in Quesnel.
