Barkerville Appoints new General Manager

Carrie Chard has been appointed to the position of General Manager, after former CEO Kate Cox stepped down for a new position with the Province.

Chard retains her responsibilities as Manager of Operations and Protection Services, on top of being the point of contact for Barkerville’s Board of Directors in the interim until a new CEO is hired.

Stewart Cawood is the Manager of Public Programming and Media at the historic town.

“Our CEO, Kate Cox, has stepped down, and the Board changed Carrie Chard’s job position title to General Manager. She continues to serve as the Manager of Operations and Protection Services, but is also the main point of contact until a new CEO is selected.”

Chard was the Manager of Operations and Protection Services of Barkerville since 2019, but has been visiting the town since her early childhood.

“Barkerville has been a significant part of my life since my mom and dad started our annual visits during my childhood.”

Chard played a crucial role alongside former CEO Cox in protecting the town’s wooden heritage structures during the Antler Creek Wildfire in 2024. Chard is a certified fire warden, and remained onsite during the five-day evacuation, supporting BC Wildfire Service to ensure the installation and functioning of a new sprinkler system that sparred Barkerville from the potential ember storm caused by the wildfire.

“The emergencies we faced this summer with the wildfires have reminded all of us how precious this place is and how crucial it is to preserve Barkerville.”
