Quesnel School District clears the air on controversial Foundation Skills Assessment test

The Foundation Skills Assessment test, also known as FSA’s, will be administered between now and November 9th in the Quesnel School District.

Superintendent Dan Lowndes says information will be sent home to parents to inform them about the test.

“I’m not here to convince one way or the other, I’m just here to provide clarity and information and the information that we send out is just to provide clarity, so parents can then make an informed decision.”

Lowndes says there is a lot of confusion in the community about whether or not their child should write the test and should they go to school and things like that.

He says the District does use the results locally.

“It can be used by the classroom teacher to inform their practice, we use it for within what’s called our framework for enhancing student learning report every year so it looks at literacy/numeracy results from our District and across other districts in the province, and to be honest it can actually be just an opportunity to sit down and take a practice test that isn’t for marks, because we do know that students at some point are going to have to take tests in their academic career.”

The controversial piece to the FSA’s over the years has been when the Fraser Institute shares the results provincially that tend to favour private schools.
