Quesnel gets ready to “take back the night”

The Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre will be hosting its annual Take Back the Night event tomorrow (Friday) night.

Brittany Marsh, a Counselor at the Centre, talks about why they hold this event.

“We hold our annual Take Back the Night event to shine a light on a very dark social issue which is gender based violence, violence against women. We also highlight the higher rates for marginalized women, and that includes the 2SLGBTQIA+ women and Indigenous women.”

Marsh says they will meet at the women’s monument at the bottom of Barlow Avenue at 6 o’clock.

“We’re going to have Indigenous drummers and elders saying prayers. We’re going to spend some time at the monument with speeches and then we are going to walk through town. We’re going to walk up Reid Street and we’re going to end up at the Quesnel Women’s Resource Centre.”

Marsh says there will be food and refreshments.

She says while they have made some strides over the years on the issue of violence against women, there is still work to do.

“Gender based violence is still very much a social issue. This past year we added four names to our local monument of women who have died from gender based violence.”

Marsh says it is important for women to continue to support each other, and to keep those who have died or are missing in our memory.
