Huge drop in Cariboo’s year over year unemployment rate

The unemployment rate in the Cariboo Region was a lot lower last month than a year ago.
Vincent Ferrao, a Labour Market Analyst with Stats Canada, says it was 4.9 percent in August of this year, down from 7.9 in August of 2023.
Ferrao says there were roughly 17-hundred and 80 more people working in the region this year.
“Currently there are 87,800 people working.  A year ago there were about 86,000.”
He says there were increases in a variety of different sectors.
“Wholesale and retail trade were up as well as healthcare and social assistance, and a little bit in information, culture, recreation and accommodation and food.”
Ferrao says there were declines in the natural resources sector.
He says there were 4,500 people unemployed last month compared to 7,400 a year ago.
Nationally, the jobless rate was 6.6 percent last month, down from 6.4.
BC’s unemployment rate came in at 5.8 percent, up from 5.5 in July.
Both Saskatchewan and Quebec were lower at 5.4 and 5.7 percent respectively.
