Area schools are back in session for another school year today (September 4).
With that in mind, RCMP detachments throughout the Cariboo remind motorists to be aware of the posted school zone speeds of 30 kilometres per hour and for children who are walking to and from bus stops and schools in the mornings and afternoons.
Another reminder for Cariboo motorists is explained by Sargent Brian Lamb with the 100 Mile House RCMP.
“The new safe passing law which came into effect in April, requires vehicles to keep at least one metre away from pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists, scooter, and wheelchair users in speed zones that are 50km/h and lower.” Sargent Brian Lamb of the 100 Mile House RCMP said, “For higher speed zones, vehicles must keep a minimum distance of 1.5 metres when passing.”
Fines for not adhering to school zone speeds and safe distance laws range from $196 to $483.
