New 108 Mile Lake Boat Launch Could Be Ready For The Long Weekend

A new boat launch in the 108 Lake West Beach area is being installed this week.

Cariboo Regional District Director for Area G Al Richmond said last week they completed a fish salvage to make sure there were no fish in the area that they are working in and this morning (Monday) they’ll be putting the precast cement slabs in.

“There are two boat launches on the 108 Lake. One is used a lot on the main beach with a good gravel base. The other one that we are rebuilding was put in by the Lions 25 or 30 years ago. The ground in the bottom of that area is not conducive to being that stable so the gravel over a period of time has sunken down.”

Richmond said this particular boat launch is accessible year round whereas the one on the main beach in the early Spring has to close the road for about a month because it’s freezes and the CRD doesn’t have the money to maintain the road.

“The boat launch in the West Beach area has a subsoil that doesn’t allow for that freeze-thaw situation with the road going to the main beach.”

Richmond said they figure the work should be done by this Friday or maybe even earlier.

“This is a project that the Greenbelt is funding is about $50,000 to put the boat launch in and we’ve have the co-operation of the Ministry of Environment. We started on this project sometime late last fall and in order to get all the approvals through it took some time. We have a 108 resident, Larry Davis who is an Environmental Specialist who has done all the permit work and the supervising of the work and we’re thankful for his contributions to this,” Richmond said.
