A new low mobility, wheelchair accessible wilderness trail was officially opened recently in Williams Lake.
Cariboo Regional District Vice Chair and Area E Director Melinda Neufeld said it has a total length of about three kilometres with several options for shorter loops.
“It’s quite scenic. It’s a basic trail with crushed gravel, it’s barrier free and there are three new accessible outhouses in various locations throughout the trail.” Neufeld said, “The trail goes totally around the Esler Sports Complex where the soccer, slo-pitch, disc golf and minor fastball are all located.”
Neufeld said this particular trail has been in the works for at least a couple of years and is funded by the Canadian and Provincial Government through Investing in Canada’s Infrastructure Program, Community Culture and Recreation Program.
And this isn’t the only trail in the Esler area.
“Across Hodgson Road on the power line side, Community Forest put in a whole bunch of walking trails in there as well.” Neufeld said, “They go around ponds and stuff like that and there are little bridges as well so there are a little more challenging trails right across from the Esler ballfield. Right now up in the Esler area we’re pretty much full of trails.”
