Members of the Pride Society were joined by several dignitaries for a special ceremony at Williams Lake City Hall.
A flag raising event was held at noon today to announce the official start of Pride Week in the Lake City.
Mayor Surinderpal Rathor said in his opening speech that everybody would be treated equally, it doesn’t matter who you are, or what your ideology, your thoughts or your beliefs are.
“When I ran for this office, when I was elected, I always had one message, be proud of who you are. We work together, pulling against each other we will not win. By working together, collaboratively, we can take this community far ahead, that’s what I’m looking for.”

Williams Lake First Nations Chief was also there to lead the drumming and singing during the flag raising.
Sellars said inclusion is very key, finding that balance in our lives in regards to making people feel safe always.
“It’s a priority for our community and something that we should be holding up every single day. Raising the Pride flag is a symbolic event, it raises awareness that we want and it sparks a conversation. We want to see more education so that people can understand exactly what it means. There should be no tension or no animosity, we should hold each other up and that’s what we stand for, and that’s what everybody should stand up for into the future supporting days like today.”
Sellars said it’s 2024, everyone should feel comfortable in their own skin and it doesn’t matter if you’re Indigenous or non-Indigenous or whatever you identify as, in order to live a healthy life you need to make sure that you are safe and that’s what days like this is about.
