Poverty Rate Is High In The Cariboo

New numbers released by the BC Child and Youth Advocacy Coalition paint a bleak picture of child poverty in the Cariboo.

28 percent of children under the age of six in Williams Lake are living in poverty and that number sits at 25 percent in Quesnel.

Only four areas in the province are higher than the Lake City with Port Alberni and Duncan being the worst at 37 percent.

The number for children under the age of 16 is 25.2 percent in the Cariboo.

First Call Provincial Coordinator Adrienne Montani says things are not improving fast enough.

She says things that would help include affordable healthcare, affordable child daycare and raising the minimum wage to 15 dollars an hour would all help.

These numbers are from the 2013 census.
