With the number of bear sightings increasing, so are the number of them being destroyed.
Conservation Office Services (COS) Sgt. Len Butler, with the Cariboo Chilcotin zone, says garbage is the number one reason why bears are being destroyed.
“It’s garbage being put out the day before…people continuously do this. That’s been our number one problem-it’s not natural food sources and encountering people in the bush. The bears are coming into town and people aren’t cleaning up,” he said.
“I know it’s the same old story and the same old broken record, but that’s exactly what it is.”
Butler says about 25 black bears have been destroyed in the 100 Mile House Area with about 10 to 12 in both Williams Lake and Quesnel.
