Premier promises pressure on Ottawa on softwood lumber agreement

Premier Christy Clark opened Wednesday’s sitting of the BC Legislature promising that her government is focused on getting a new Canada – US softwood lumber agreement in place.

She says it will be the first thing she mentions to whoever comes out of the federal election as Prime Minister.

“None of us in this province can forget that forestry built our province. We also know that we cannot take its continued success for granted,” Clark said.

“We have to work hard to ensure that forestry will endure as a key pillar of jobs and growth to ensure that the 80 communities that depend on it continue to thrive. In order to do this, we all need to very determinedly and purposefully work together.”

Across the aisle, NDP leader John Horgan agreed.

“I’m looking forward to sharing information and ideas on how we can work together in unison for all British Columbians to protect this critical and vital industry.”

“Everyone in this house benefits, whether is the community the Minister articulated or even like myself, I made my way through university working in the forest sector,” Horgan said

The current softwood lumber agreement expires on Oct. 12. The United States has agreed to a one year grace period before implementing trade action.
