Investigative Team on Way to New Fire Discovered Near Williams Lake

An investigative crew is on the way to a new blaze 10km west of Big Creek, about 90km southwest of Williams Lake.

Cariboo Fire Centre Fire Information Officer Emily Epp says the cause of the fire which was discovered this afternoon is under investigation.

“We’re sending a fire investigating team out to determine what was the cause of the fire.”

Epp says smoke from the 9-hectare fire maybe quite visible in nearby areas.

“We currently have 4 air tankers responding as well as a helicopter. We have 3 firefighters on scene and 5 pieces of heavy equipment on their way as well as 20 more firefighters to do fire suppression.”

A 0.5-hectare lightning-caused fire near Snag Lake west of 100 Mile House was extinguished by crews on Friday.

Another lightning-caused wildfire south of Chilko Lake within Ts’il?os Provincial Park, about 125 kilometers southwest of Alexis Creek, continues to burn meanwhile at about 220 hectares.

Epp says because of the location and remote nature of the fire, crews are working with the land managers (both BC Parks and the Xeni Gwet’in First Nation) to determine an appropriate fire response strategy.
