Williams Lake Airport Rehabilitation Project Ready for Take Off after receiving close to $4.5 million in government funding

The Williams Lake Regional Airport will be taking off after receiving funding from both the provincial and federal government to rehabilitate their 7,000-foot runway.

Shea De La Mare, Manager of the Airport says the project had been in the works for quite some time.

“Several years ago we determined that the runway did need some rehabilitation and resurfacing work-it hasn’t been rehabilitated since 1997.”

“In 1997 Transport Canada handed over the airport to the City of Williams Lake and since that time there have been many opportunities for funding to do projects like this.”

“To have not only the provincial funding but the federal funding announced, it’s a wonderful opportunity for not just the City of Williams Lake but the entire Cariboo region.”

De La Mare says although it is not for certain when the project will begin, flights will not be affected.

“We’re looking at perhaps the fourth quarter, so this fall or winter. Obviously a paving project we can’t go too far into the winter but we’re certainly feeling out the possibilities of completing it this fall.”

“When we start it will be conducted at night so the airport will remain open during the daytime so it won’t affect any of the scheduled airlines or the tanker base or stuff like that.”

The province’s funding of close to half a million dollars will rehabilitate about 1,000 feet of the runaway, with almost $3.9 million dollars from federal government rehabilitating the rest and replacing runway threshold end lights.
