Landfill ban on recyclables in effect

A landfill ban on recyclables is now effective within the Cariboo Regional District.

Chair of the CRD and Area G Director, Al Richmond says the ban which is in part of a new bylaw that saw commercial tipping fees increase by 14.5% last month, will help protect the environment and conserve landfill space.

“I think if you were to visit some of our landfill sites, particularly the one up at Gibraltar, the prevalence of passenger and truck tires that are thrown into the garbage and the landfills is just criminal.”

“There are ways with dealing with these tires and recycling them and putting them back in utilized form.”

Commercial loads of waste containing more than 10% by volume of recyclables will be charged at an increased rate.

Recyclables include, but are not limited to: deposit beverage containers, oil filters, paints, batteries, and electronics.
