Xeni Gwet’in Riders on way to Williams Lake Stampede

The Xeni Gwet’in Riders will be making their way to the Williams Lake Stampede today following a 200 km journey throughout the Chilcotin.

Xeni Gwet’in Councillor Marilyn Baptiste says this will mark the 7th year for the riders.

“It was part of our youth program where you know we’re trying to include more of our youth in an activity or an annual activity that was going to be able to help them learn more cultural activities and being out there on the land as well.”

“The reason why we came up with this idea is our elders and our people used to do this as part of their survival many, many years ago.”

“Now much more of our elders are on the wagon trip and they really enjoy being out with the youth and the people.”

The riders who are joined with Chief Roger William will be arriving into Williams Lake off of Highway 20 at around 6 pm.

They had departed from the Nemiah Valley on June 19th.
