Tolko and West Fraser Close Operations Due to Wildfire Activity

Both Tolko and West Fraser confirmed Sunday, July 9 that they will not be operating due to the current wildfire situation within the Cariboo.

“With more than sixty fires burning in the Cariboo area, several of which are threatening the community of Williams Lake and surrounding rural communities, Tolko’s Lakeview and Soda Creek divisions will not operate tomorrow, Monday, July 10,” said Tolko. “Moving forward, Managers will meet daily to determine operating status and these updates will be communicated via Tolko’s website and social media channels.”

“Our top priority is the safety and well-being of our employees; many of whom have been displaced from their homes. Our message to our employees is to stay safe and look after your family and home.”

West Fraser also issued a statement Sunday, July 9 and says that West Fraser operations in 100 Mile, Williams Lake and Chasm are closed.

“West Fraser mills in the proximity of active fires have staff and resources that are being deployed to protect our facilities and the community. Unless notified by your supervisor, take care of your family and personal matters. When we begin to start our operations again you will be notified.”

“The health and safety of all of our West Fraser families is of paramount importance. Please follow instructions of local authorities and take all necessary precautions. The situation is evolving rapidly.”
