Grass fires Keep Williams Lake Fire Department Busy

The Williams Lake Fire Department responded to the fourth grass fire within 24 hours Saturday morning.

Fire Chief Des Webster says some kids were seen lighting the fire in front of Boitanio Place Apartments and taking off.

“It’s very reckless on their part. It’s just kids have nothing better to do, walking through the park with lighters or matches. It’s unfortunate. We’re lucky no property was damaged.”

Webster says the Department responded to the fire, put it out, and then took it upon themselves to do some fuel management and burn off some of the unburned grass.

He says conditions are very dry.

“It’s actually getting even drier with the wind and the sun that we’re getting right now, especially a south facing slope like this. The grass is extremely dry for just having lost the snow a week or so ago.”
