MLA Holds Opportunity Session In Quesnel

Quesnel will host what Cariboo North MLA Coralee Oakes is calling an “Opportunity Session” this week.

It will take place tomorrow (Sept 20) from 8-30 in the morning until 4-30 in the afternoon at the Seniors’ Centre.

Oakes says the idea is to bring the community together to share potentital opportunities in light of the significant transition that is expected because of the anticipated drop in available fibre in the area.

“This is everything from BC timber sales to value-added to bio mass opportunities, there could be opportunities in tourism.”

Oakes says this session will be the first step.

She says where she believes the province has failed in the past is not putting an idea back into the hands of the community, something she says will be different this time around.

“The critical work is going to come in the months that follow in creating those working groups of how do we hand it over back into the community and we become, as elected officials, the advocates and champions for these projects.”

Oakes says working groups will get together, beginning in October, on the first Friday of every month to figure out what the process is moving forward.
