Auditor General Makes Recommendations in Policing Audit on the City of Williams Lake

An audit on the City of Williams Lake policing oversight was released yesterday.

Auditor General for Local Government, Ruth Gordon examined the City’s management and utilization of the Municipal Policing Unit Agreement as well as  police budget between 2010-2013.

He made six recommendations.

“These really included for example enhancing their understanding of the municipal policing agreement, to improving oversight through enhance governance, enhancing their reporting processes, and really paying closer attention to policing cost drivers such as overtime and civilian support services.”

The recommendations also included forming a Police Committee that will look at policing costs and initiatives.

Ruth says during the audit work, City staff became more aware of provisions and subsequently enhanced their cost monitoring practices.

He says in addition, the City and detachment worked cooperatively and communicated regularly on policing priorities, budgets and crime trends.

The audit is one of five that were completed on local governments throughout the province.

Common leanings from all of the completed audits according to Ruth will be put together and shared with the community at large in the near future.
